Stephen Biegun, the longtime U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, has been nominated to serve as Deputy Secretary of State, a notice from the White House showed on Thursday.

Biegun has served as the U.S.’s top diplomat working on North Korea policy since August last year, and is expected to continue to hold the position in his new role as number two in the State Department.

His new position will require confirmation from the U.S. Senate, and, if confirmed, Biegun will replace John J. Sullivan, who has been nominated to serve as U.S. ambassador to Russia.
