The South Korean government on Wednesday announced a plan to begin opening up some parts of demilitarized zone (DMZ) and its surrounding areas to the public.

In plans unveiled at a joint news conference by five government ministries, Seoul said it plans to begin operating one of three “peace and security”-themed walking trails connected to the DMZ later in the month.

Among the ministries involved are the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), the Ministry of National Defense (MND), and the Ministry of Unification (MOU), with the plans described, for the time-being, as representing a “DMZ Peace Trail,”
