North Korea launched an “ICBM class” ballistic missile which flew over 1000km towards Japan late on Friday, according to South Korea media reports citing the country’s military.

The comments were later echoed by Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis, who added the missile flew on a lofted trajectory and was an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The missile was fired from Jagang province at 11.41 pm (KST), the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary claimed the missile was in flight for 45 minutes, and may have landed within 230km of the Japanese coast, in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
