North Korea celebrated the successful launch of the new Hwasong-12 ballistic missile with hundreds of thousands of Pyongyang residents greeting the missile’s developers, Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), reported on Friday.
North Korea announced on Monday that the country had successfully test-fired a “ground-to-ground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket” the previous day.
The ruling party organ reported on Wednesday and Thursday that North Koreans in various fields of farming, science, and technology has been “inspired” by the test-firing of Hwasong-12 under the same sub-headline that “The whole country boiled with the news” of the launch.
The party organ released a statement celebrating “The gratifying victory which puts a damper on American-style bluff” on Thursday.
North Korea’s missile test on Sunday sparked condemnation from the international community, with the White House describing North Korea as a “menace” and the United Nations Security Council holding an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss a united response. It was the country’s fourth successful test out of seven conducted this year.
Followed by a series of state media reports praising the missile launch, the Rodong Sinmun said the developers of the Hwasong-12 ballistic missile had arrived Pyongyang on Thursday and were greeted by Ri Man Gon, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the WPK, and other officials.
Photos in the Rodong Sinmun showed North Koreans cheering while waving colorful paper flowers and DPRK national flags to welcome more than ten buses carrying the developers.
“Every street in the capital city fluttered with celebration atmosphere to greet the warriors of the national defense and science,” the newspaper said.
Rodong Sinmun said the developers were men who had “bravely rushed to a new goal showing proudly to the world and brought the historical decisive victory in developing nuclear attack means and strategic weapons which can end the confrontation with the U.S. imperialist and give the North the ultimate victory like the checkmate.”
It is noteworthy that the DPRK has celebrated the successful launch of Hwasong-12, which is not an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) but an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) with a maximum range of 5,000 km. The launch of the Pukguksong-2, which has a similar range, was not met with the same degree of adulation.
The media praised it as a “Juche (self-reliance) weapon which is another perfect weapon system congruous with the military strategic of the party and the demand of the present times.”
