Washington is seeking a peaceful solution to threats presented by the North Korea’s nuclear program, though it will “not hesitate” to defend itself or its allies, the administration said in a statement following a White House briefing on Wednesday.

The meeting was unusual: all 100 U.S. senators were invited to attend the classified briefing hosted by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Following the meeting, Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats issued a joint statement on the current administration’s North Korea policy going forward.

“The president’s approach aims to pressure North Korea into dismantling
