U.S. President Barack Obama called North Korea a “wasteland” during his last speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday.

The comments were made as the outgoing President delivered an indictment of command economies and failed economic models.

“The stark contrast of between, say, the success of the Republic of Korea and the wasteland of North Korea shows that central planned control of the economy is a dead end,” Obama said.

The speech was broadcast live on the UN’s website and limited images of the North Korean delegation showed little reaction.
