Why North Korean defectors got paid to protest

Defector-activist says payment was for defectors' 'welfare,' compensation for their 'hard work'

Since it was revealed in mid-April that North Korean defectors received money as a reward for attending conservative rallies, the name of defector-activist Kim Mi-hwa has frequently come up.

Kim is currently working in three different defectors organizations, but in the South Korean media she is best known for arranging for defectors to attend political rallies – for which they would receive pay later – through the conservative Korea Parents Federation.
