South and North Korean labor unions are gearing up to organize a soccer competition in Seoul on August 15, the nation’s liberation day, following last year’s match in Pyongyang.

The announcement under the title of “joint committee for promoting the football match” was declared on June 15, the 16th anniversary of the first inter-Korean summits in 2000.

While the South Korean government rejected the unions’ applications to fax their Northern counterparts about the event, they communicated via media reports.

“We deliver our intent to achieve the inter-Korean workers’ soccer competition despite any obstacles,” the announcement reads.
