North Korea has fired numerous short-range projectiles from a launch site near Hamhung, South Hamgyeong Province into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) at 3:19PM, South Korean media reported on Monday.

The projectiles flew about 200 kilometers from the site the Joongang Ilbo reported, citing a South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official.

The exact type of missile has not been confirmed yet, but local media reports said the projectile may be the improved version of KN-02, a missile that can fly up to 220 kilometers.

“The KN-02 is already considered to be the most accurate ballistic missile in the KPA inventory, with a 100-meter CEP (circular error probability) – meaning 50 percent of the missiles fired should land within 100 meters of their target,” NK News director of intelligence John Grisafi wrote in an article on the topic.

“Combining this accuracy – as well as mobility – with improved ranges increases Pyongyang’s potential ability to strike key targets in the South.”

The missiles were fired only four days after the last short range missile launch, which was presumed to be the Rodong-1 missile, based on the distance it traveled.

The launch is the fourth so far this year, following the test firing of a new 300 millimeter rocket artillery system on March 4, two Scud missiles on March 10 and another short-range missile launch on March 17.

The missile launches coincide with the passing of UN resolution 2270 on March 2. The tough new measures were issued by the UN Security Council in response to a nuclear test and satellite launch in January and February.
