South Korea is considering a ban on ships that have sailed from ports in the North, Ministry of Unification (MoU) spokesperson Jeong Joon-hee said Monday at a press briefing.

The new sanction would follow Japan, which enacted similar measures last week in response to North Korea’s recent nuclear test and satellite launch.

The additional sanctions from Seoul would likely come after an upcoming resolution currently in the works at the UN.

“I would like to say South Korea’s own maritime sanctions will be under consideration after the UN sanction,” Jeong said in a statement on the MoU’s website.
