Korea Military Academy considers resuming ‘unification’ motto

S. Korean military considering harder-line slogan after Pyongyang’s nuclear test

The Korea Military Academy said on Tuesday that they are strongly considering bringing back their old salutation motto tongil (“unification”), meaning in this context unification by military force.

The academy, which opened in 1946, used the salutation motto tongil until former President Roh Moo-hyun’s administration, which sought closer cooperation with the North, changed it to chungsung (“loyalty”) in 2003.

Use of anti-North or anti-communist salutations is still a norm in the South Korean military, though. While the South Korean military’s universal salutation motto is chungsung, many divisions still use or have used aggressive mottos such as bukjin (“march north”),
