First N.Korean-made subway car makes symbolic run

Repeated emphasis on 'building strength by one’s self' indicates direction of country's economy

North Korean state outlet DPRK Today on Saturday reported the launch of the first North Korean-made subway car, which made its symbolic run on the rails of the Pyongyang underground.

North Korea’s state-made subways project started last year, when national leader Kim Jong Un visited Kim Jong Tae electric locomotive factory in July.

“(The train cars) are looking … very snazzy. LCD screens, bright lights … it’s really bizarre seeing it. Looks so out of place with the chandeliers, mosaics … and even the train staff wear the same old Soviet-styled uniform,” Rowan Beard of Young Pioneer Tours told NK News.
