China’s environmental agency is conducting emergency radiation monitoring, in order to detect signs of North Korea’s nuclear test conducted on Wednesday, according to local media.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that as of yesterday no abnormal radiation levels had been detected.

“The Environmental Protection Ministry’s real-time automatic monitoring on atmospheric radiation shows that the dose rate of gamma radiation is, within the range of local background, which means normal,” Hua said.

The FM spokesperson added that the tests were ongoing and updates on the results would be “made public”.
