What Chinese experts think of U.S., S.Korea’s N.Korea approaches

Scholars, observers think Trustpolitik has potential; ‘strategic patience’ not so much

South Korea under Park Geun-hye offers the North incentives for denuclearization in the hopes of starting talks and cooperation – it calls this Trustpolitik.

The U.S. under Barack Obama, burnt by the collapse of the Leap Day Deal in 2012, offers the North nothing until the North itself indicates an interest in reining in its nuclear/missile development.

Both of these programs have been derided in the West – Park’s plan is contingent on the North being willing to give up something it considers non-negotiable for something it has not prioritized in recent decades, and Obama’s plan (or lack thereof)
