News Overseas workers highlighted in N. Korean human rights reportIssues of divided families also raised, along with new statistics on executions
UN’s Special Rapporteur on North Korean human rights Maruzuki Darusman submitted a report to UN General Assembly charting ongoing abuses, dedicating additional attention to executions and overseas labor. The report included a few positive developments, but also ongoing human rights violations in North Korea such as public executions, arbitrary detentions and poor treatment of the overseas workers. It again highlighted the human rights of “separated families” as a particular concern of the Special Rapporteur, and urged “joint efforts toward reunification and to enhance economic and cultural exchanges,” which was also mentioned in the August 25 Agreement between South and North. © Korea Risk Group.
