N.Korean defectors policy needs reform: Korea Hana Foundation

The government policy should be more efficient to increase responsibility of defectors

Chung Ok-nim, president of Korea Hana Foundation on Thursday stated that the South Korean policy for defectors should be revamped to promote the independence and responsibility of defectors.

At the event, entitled “North Korean defectors and government policy in a transition period,” she pointed out the inefficiency of past policies and proposed changes.

“There are more suppliers than needs, and programs overlap. Overall, there are 19 governmental organizations related to defectors. The foundation should work as a hub to integrate programs,” Chung said.

“Some defectors are highly politicized and have excessive requirements, using their defector identity as a privilege,” Chung said
