A request to have North Korea’s human rights situation placed on the UN Security Council (UNSC) agenda was made on Friday following a letter signed by two-thirds of the Council’s members.

The letter, which was drafted by Australia, requested that the issue be placed on the UNSC agenda and that a formal meeting for discussions be scheduled in December.

The request to hold a meeting was agreed upon by Ambassador Cherif Mahamat Zene from Chad, which holds the UNSC’s presidency for December, a spokesman told the AFP, however a date for the discussion has yet to be set.
