Official mentions ‘detention centers,’ not prison camps

Expert says North 'conflates' labor camps with less severe 'reform' facilities

A North Korean official’s public discussion of “detention centers” attracted attention Tuesday, but did not actually include an admission of a nationwide system of political prison camps.

North Korean foreign ministry official Choe Myong Nam on Tuesday mentioned “reform through labor” facilities, which he at first referred to as “detention camps” before correcting himself, describing them as “detention centers” instead.
