UN extends UNICEF sanctions exemption amid “unanticipated” logistical challenges

The UN this week extended a previous-granted sanctions exemption to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) by six months, the official website of the UN’s 1718 committee revealed late Friday, allowing it to import several otherwise-restricted items into North Korea.
In a letter dated December 4 and uploaded this past week, chairman of the 1718 committee Christoph Heusgen informed the UN agency that the committee had agreed to grant it an adjusted timeframe for a previous exemption initially granted back in April.
