The work to decommission nearly two dozen batteries around the Yongbyon nuclear complex began back in 2023, and it may represent an effort to replace outdated capabilities with new technology from Russia.

But while the purpose remains unclear, it marks the country’s largest shift in land-based air defense infrastructure since Kim Jong Un rose to power.
