Months after the South Korean military was put in the hot seat for failing to quickly apprehend a North Korean man crossing the border, the country’s defense ministry said it will install an artificial intelligence-powered monitoring system along one of the world’s most heavily-militarized borders.
On Thursday, the Ministry of National Defense said the AI system will first be deployed on a trial basis at the area monitored by the South Korean Army’s 22nd Division. The division’s commander, Major Gen. Pyo Chang-soo, was held responsible for the defector’s crossing in February and fired as a consequence.
