Biden’s ‘Asia tsar’ appointee adds to a wave of focus on North Korea and China

Kurt Campbell’s next pivot to Asia strategy involves the U.S. bringing its allies together to pressure North Korea

A day after the White House declassified a document outlining President Trump’s goals in the Indo-Pacific, President-elect Joe Biden named his top adviser for the region in an all-new role that signals unprecedented focus on countries like North Korea and China.

On Wednesday, Biden named Kurt Campbell as coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs on the National Security Council (NSC). Campbell has a long list of titles: He’s currently the CEO of the Asia Group, formerly the CEO and cofounder of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and also a past assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs under President Barack Obama.
