North Korean party daily the Rodong Sinmun and cabinet newspaper Minju Choson on Monday hailed leader Kim Jong Un’s military leadership with multiple articles, marking the eighth anniversary of his appointment to the title of “Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army.”
The anniversary fell on the same day as state media coverage of the second-day session of the long-awaited Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) party plenum, presided over by Kim on Sunday, where he discussed economic and military issues.
The North Korean leader brought a “ground-breaking turning point” in the country’s development of “revolutionary armed force… inheriting from the great leaders… the line of giving importance to the military,” one article in the Rodong Sinmun said.
The “dignity, happiness, and the bright future of our people is up to [our country having] the strongest military power,” the article went on, noting how Kim recently guided the Third Enlarged Meeting of the Seventh Central Military Commission (CMC) of the WPK.
Other Rodong Sinmun articles went on to praise Kim’s military leadership in the years after he assumed the Supreme Commander title, including when he guided a round of training exercises by sharpshooters from the country’s Air and Anti-Aircraft Force of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) this November.
An editorial carried on the first page of the Minju Choson on Monday said that the country’s military is equipped with “the most powerful means of striking” that are “ready to manage any type of war,” adding that it is thanks to Kim that the country is now capable of national defense with “powerful war deterrent” against the “hostile forces.”
State media also described Kim as a “heaven-born” leader, in an apparent move to further bolster his cult of personality.
The article at the top of the second page of Monday’s Rodong Sinmun, following plenum coverage on the first page, described Kim as “the general among the generals, who, with his extraordinary military talent… and the prominence of his accumulated feats in military leadership, receives the admiration of the people.”
An editorial carried by Minju Choson also quoted the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il when he reportedly said that “Kim Jong Un is a Mount Paektu-type general, equipped with dignity and talent” as a leader, while another article called Kim an “extraordinary, heaven-born” great man.
A Rodong Sinmun article, carried on its third page, discussed a Mount Paektu-themed song dedicated to Kim Jong Un, referring to 2019 as the “year of miracles” when “powerful Juche weapons… were consecutively born,” along with the construction achievements in Samjiyon, Jungphyong Vegetable Greenhouse Farm, and the Yangdok Hot Spring Resort.
Minju Choson reported that celebratory meetings were held on Saturday, although no major event marking the anniversary was observed on Monday — likely the third day of the ongoing party plenary meeting.
Kim Jong Un, the third hereditary ruler of North Korea’s Kim family, assumed the position of “Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army” on December 30, 2011, two weeks after his father and late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il passed away on December 17, 2011.
After the recent constitutional revision, Kim is now referred to as the “Supreme Commander of the armed forces of the DPRK.”
