Pyongyang has renovated the Sosan Hotel and Kyonghung Restaurant and built a new cruise ship to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, state media have reported.
“Completion of the renovation of Sosan Hotel is a realization of the orders of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il,” Ro Tu Chol, the vice-premier and chairman of the State Planning Commission was quoted as saying by the Korean Central News Agency at the dedication ceremony Monday.
The 70th anniversary ceremony for the WPK will take place on Saturday.
Previously opened in 1989, Sosan Hotel was christened by national founder Kim Il Sung. Before renovations, the thirty-floor hotel could accommodate more than 500, with 11 first-class accommodations, according to Chosun Ilbo’s database. The hotel is located near the busiest center of Pyongyang, adjacent to Sosan Soccer Stadium and Ryanggang Hotel.
The newly built Kyounghung restaurant in Pyongyang measures more than 1,600 square meters. The restaurant has a national dish hall, dinning hall, party hall, shop, public bath, beauty salon and massage room.
According to a Tongil (Unification) News report from 2007, the previous Kyounghung restaurant could accommodate more than 100 customers at a time, with more than 20 employees serving dishes including pork belly with lettuce, hot stone pot bibimbap, sushi, steamed duck, steamed cow rib and steamed mandarin fish.
The new Mujigae (rainbow) cruise ship was also introduced to Pyongyang residents on Monday.
“The boat, which opened on the threshold of the 70th founding anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea is a gift that Kim Jong Un presented to the Korean people,” said North Korean Prime Minister Park Pong Ju during the commemoration speech.
NK News previously reported on the Mujigae on September 25.
According to the report, at least 1,230 guests can cruise on the Mujigae and enjoy the picturesque Taedong River. The boat will feature a Korean restaurant, beverage room, dining room, banquet hall, buffet restaurant, deck restaurant, revolving restaurant and shop.
“The hotel construction, new restaurant and ferry boat all tell me that Kim Jong Un is very interested in making Pyongyang the most ‘westernized’ city in North Korea,” said Cheong Sung-jang of the Sejong Institute. “Unlike his grandfather Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un has experience visiting the world’s most famous cities such as Paris or Zürich. So it is natural for him to try to provide the Western lifestyle to Pyongyang citizens, as he strongly intends to enrich Pyongyang.”
“North Korea is focusing on pushing its workers to finish construction of various facilities some time before 70th Anniversary of Workers’ Party of Korea,” said Rhee Yoojin, a researcher at the Korea Development Bank.
“To advertise their accomplishments on national media, North Korea’s current main interest would be finishing as many welfare facilities as they can,” she said, adding that listing newly constructed buildings in state media will continue until October 10.
