Family of deceased Japanese visit North Korea

Trips may be timed to emphasize improving relations between two ahead of meeting next week

Nine family members of Japanese nationals who died during and after World War II have arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday to pay respects to their relatives. The majority are senior citizens.

Flying with Air Koryo from Beijing, their arrival appeared timed to indicate a rapid recovery in relations between North Korea and Japan, the Yonhap News Agency reported. Beijing press reported that this kind of visit was unusual, stating that North Korea is trying to show a highly “enthusiastic” view of their improved ties with Japan.
