Australia holds firm, blocks North Korean embassy

Nuclear testing, financial reasons may be behind indefinite closure

The Australian government has put an indefinite hold on North Korea’s plans to reopen an embassy in Canberra.

Following the North’s third nuclear test in February, the Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade department (DFAT) postponed a visit by North Korean diplomats to inspect potential embassy sites. Statements from the Australian government indicate that their stance toward the North has not changed.
