ANALYSIS: Where Kenneth Bae is being detained

Bae has been passed between the hands of countless state security organs

WASHINGTON D.C. – On May 15, 2013, DPRK state media announced that a 44-year old Kenneth Bae, arrested in the special economic trade zone in Rajin-Sonbong in November 2012 and tried and sentenced to 15 years’ hard labor for “an attempt at state subversion in April 2013, had “started his life at a ‘special prison.’”

North Korean authorities have not disclosed where Bae was detained before he was remanded to Pyongyang or where he stayed whilst his case was adjudicated by the North Korean Supreme (central) Court.  There has also been no disclosure about the “special prison” where Bae has been incarcerated.
