North Korean Toys: Juche Lego Sets

From the Russian language blog “Show and Tell Pyongyang

I would like to offer you a glimpse into the production of toys in North Korea.
I decided to break it into several parts, this part I will show you a particular type of North Korean toy, a kind of Juche-Lego.

I wanted to move away from serious topics to write about North Korean toys.
I have collected several Juche-Lego kits and all of them are designed well.
Instructions can be found in the kit packages which explain how to construct whatever each individual kit is designed for (usually vehicles or buildings).  The instructions are in Korean and English and they also include detailed illustrations (I usually add a few additional details not included in the instructions).

1. Here are directions for assembling a bulldozer

2. It takes a few minutes of construction

3. Feast your eyes on this beauty!

Here are train cars with a locomotive, similar instructions were included with this project but with slightly less detail. This is my only train set as I have mostly collected car kits.

5. Here’s an apartment building, it’s hardly structurally stable.

Here’s an ice cream truck

Juche-Lego people to manage the vehicles are not included. Constructing these toys happily brings me back to my childhood! The kits cost about 700 won and it has taken me as much as 20 minutes to assemble some of the kits! The DPRK sells domestically produced toys along with imported Chinese creations.

In my next post, I will describe other North Korean produced plastic toys.

Wow Lego, you sure are annoyingly litigious. You may consider such things as “not permissable”, but satirical references such as that are protected speech.

    • Juche

Oh and let me know when you start selling Lego to North Korea. Then you might be able to substantiate the “competitive[sic] product” reference.

Oddly this article is the number one hit on Google for Harriet Lassen + Lego.

Love reading the ignorant western comments on here. Lego promotes beauty and baking to your girls, while promoting building and thinking to boys. Hate women much?
